What is the new Colorado English Learner PD Requirement?
To support students who are English language learners, the Colorado State Board of Education adopted new rules in June 2018 requiring educators with elementary, math, science, social studies and English language arts endorsements to complete 45 clock hours or three semester hours in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) Education professional development (PD) within their next five-year license renewal cycle. (For example, teachers holding a professional license that expires in September 2018 would need to meet the requirements by September 2023.) See the CDE webpage for more information on “By When Do I Have to Do This?”
Using Previous SIOP Training to Meet a Portion of the New Requirement
Between the years of 2011-2016 St. Vrain teachers participated in high quality, annual 5-hour SIOP training workshops that meet the new CDE training in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) Education PD parameters. Teachers employed during these years may have accumulated up to 25 hours of SIOP training that meets the new CDE training in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) Education PD parameters. This means that a portion of your 45 hour training may already be completed.
The Office of Priority Programs is working with the Office of Professional Development to transfer these SIOP training hours into your district PD transcripts by February 2019. You will be able to use your transcripts as verification in your relicensure process.
We are partnering with the CU Denver to provide a series of high quality English Learner PD. The Office of Professional Development will offer a series three different e-Workshops over the next 5 years to ensure that all teachers needing English Learner PD will have access training that meets the CDE relicensure requirement.
Teachers needing complete 45 clock hours of English Learner PD should take all three workshops prior to renewing their next license. Teachers with accrued SIOP training from the 2011-2016 school years should complete the remainder of their required hours from the e-Workshops below.
